Historic preservation (US), heritage preservation or heritage conservation (UK), is an endeavour that seeks to preserve, conserve and protect buildings, objects, landscapes or other artifacts of historical significance. It is a philosophical concept that became popular in the twentieth century, which maintains that cities as products of centuries’ development should be obligated to protect. Historic preservation is a movement in planning designed to conserve old buildings and areas in an effort to tie a place's history to its population and culture. It is also an essential component of green building in that it reuses structures that are already present as opposed to new construction.
